A PRACTICE IN PLAY
In the past couple of years, I've been consciously embracing play in my life, and actively letting go of control. I believe in the mind/body/soul connection, and have witnessed first-hand how clinging too tightly to control can be damaging to your health and psyche.
I wanted to reflect that same element of playfulness in my art, and this new series A PRACTICE IN PLAY experiments with granulating watercolours, coloured pencils, and paint markers.
Granulating watercolours contain heavier and irregular-sized pigment particles that create interesting and often unpredictable patterns that mimic those seen in nature, like cresting waves or whorls in wood. I limit how much I manipulate the paint when applying it to the canvas, preferring to let the paint surprise me when it dries.
I then layer on lil' creatures and motifs in coloured pencils and/or paint markers, and play with my canvases until they feel complete.
I create for both of us, leaving room for you, the viewer, to impose your own playful interpretation on each piece. In that way, each work is a collaborative practice in play between you and me xx
With love, your bud,
